Step by step

Crowns and bridges in London

01

How the treatment goes

Crown treatment starts with preparing the tooth: the dentist shapes it evenly, under local anaesthetic, to make room for the ceramic. The intraoral scanner takes a digital impression, with no paste in your mouth. The crown is made of all-ceramic material, with no metal, and tried in for colour, shape and bite before it is cemented. A bridge follows the same steps on two supporting teeth.

02

Visits and timing

A dental crown usually takes 2 visits 5 to 7 days apart: preparation and scan, then try-in and cementation. You wear a temporary crown in between, while the crown is made in the Smalț ceramics lab in Bucharest, which works for all three clinics. A 3-unit bridge takes 2 or 3 visits within the same week.

03

Who it suits

A crown suits root-treated teeth, teeth with large fillings that may crack, and cracked or worn teeth. A bridge replaces one or two missing teeth, but it requires shaping the neighbouring teeth, so the written plan sets it next to the implant option. Both options are listed with their full price.

04

Aftercare

A crown is brushed like a natural tooth, and the edge at the gum is cleaned with floss or interdental brushes. The tooth under the crown can still decay at the margin if plaque is left there. You leave with a written record of the material, shade and cement, so the margins can be checked at your yearly visit.

05

Crown, bridge or implant: the cost

An all-ceramic crown costs £1,650. A 3-unit bridge, which replaces one missing tooth, costs £4,950 and requires shaping two neighbouring teeth. A complete implant with crown costs £3,950 and leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched. The written plan sets the options side by side, with the price of each.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a dental crown in London at Smalț?

An all-ceramic crown costs £1,650, including preparation, scan, temporary crown, try-in and cementation. A 3-unit bridge costs £4,950.

Can a crown be made in one day?

Not in London. Crowns for the London clinic are made in the Smalț ceramics lab in Bucharest and fitted at a second visit, 5 to 7 days after the scan. Same-day milled crowns, when the case allows, are made only at the Bucharest clinic, where the lab is.

Crown or implant for a missing tooth?

A missing tooth is replaced either with a bridge, resting on shaped neighbouring teeth, or with an implant and crown, which does not touch them. A 3-unit bridge costs £4,950 and a complete implant £3,950. The choice depends on the bone and on the state of the neighbouring teeth.

What does all-ceramic mean?

All-ceramic means a crown with no metal inside, made of ceramic or zirconia. It lets light through like enamel and avoids the grey line at the gum that sometimes appears with older metal-based crowns.

How long does a dental crown last?

How long a crown lasts depends on hygiene, bite, teeth grinding and regular check-ups, so there is no fixed term. The crown itself does not decay, but the tooth under it can decay at the margin. The yearly check-up looks at it.
