Step by step

Root canal treatment in London

01

How the treatment goes

Root canal treatment starts with local anaesthetic and a rubber dam around the tooth. The endodontist opens the tooth, finds each canal under the microscope and removes the inflamed or infected nerve. The canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected, then filled and sealed. A final X-ray shows whether the seal reaches the tip of the root.

02

Visits and timing

A root canal treatment usually takes 1 or 2 visits of 60 to 90 minutes. When both visits are needed, they are usually 2 to 7 days apart. If the tooth then needs a crown, it is made in the Smalț ceramics lab in Bucharest and fitted at a later visit, usually 5 to 7 days after the scan.

03

Why under the microscope

The operating microscope magnifies the working area up to 25 times. Molars often have an extra thin canal that is hard to see with the naked eye, and a canal left untreated can keep an infection going. For curved or calcified canals, the endodontist checks the 3D CT scan first.

04

Aftercare

The tooth can be tender when biting for 2 to 3 days after treatment. Treated molars and premolars become more brittle, so a crown is usually recommended within a few weeks. A check X-ray at 6 to 12 months shows whether the area at the root tip has healed, taken at the clinic or by your own dentist, using the report and X-rays you receive.

05

What the price covers

The price of root canal treatment depends on the number of canals: £850 on a front tooth, £1,050 on a premolar, £1,350 on a molar. Retreatment of a previously treated molar costs £1,650, because the old root filling has to be removed first. The build-up and crown are priced separately in the written plan.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a root canal in London at Smalț?

Root canal treatment under the microscope costs £850 on a front tooth, £1,050 on a premolar and £1,350 on a molar with up to 4 canals. Retreatment of a molar costs £1,650.

Does a root canal hurt?

Root canal treatment is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure rather than pain. Strong pain usually comes from the inflamed nerve before treatment. Afterwards the tooth can be tender when biting for 2 to 3 days.

Can I fly after a root canal?

Yes. Flying after a completed root canal treatment is not a problem. If the treatment is split into two visits, the temporary filling between them is sealed, and the written plan tells you the dates of both visits.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Treated molars and premolars usually need a crown, because they become more brittle and can crack when chewing. Front teeth with little structure lost can be restored with a filling. The written plan tells you which applies.

What is root canal retreatment?

Retreatment is done on a tooth treated before, where the infection has returned or the seal did not reach the root tip. The old root filling is removed under the microscope, the canals are cleaned again and resealed. On a molar it costs £1,650.
