First visit
Your first visit: the diagnosis
The first visit at Smalț is the diagnosis, the same at each of the three clinics, and takes 45 minutes. It includes the examination, a 3D CT scan (CBCT), photographs and an intraoral scan, costs £395 in London, and no treatment is done that day. The written plan, in English if you prefer, with each option and its full price, reaches you by email within 48 hours.
What happens in the 45 minutes
- 01
The conversation
The dentist asks what brought you in, what bothers you and what treatment you have had. This is also when you say if you are anxious and what scares you.
- 02
The examination
Each tooth, the gums, the bite and the jaw joint, checked one by one with a mirror and a probe.
- 03
The 3D CT scan
The CBCT image of both jaws takes under a minute. It shows the bone, roots, canals and nerves in three dimensions.
- 04
Photographs and scan
Photographs of your smile and teeth, plus an intraoral scan, with no impression paste in your mouth.
The written plan, within 48 hours
The treatment plan reaches you by email within 48 hours of the diagnosis. It sets out what the dentist found, the treatment options, how many stages each one has, how many visits or trips it needs and the full price of each option. Treatment starts only when you decide, with the plan in hand.
- what the dentist found, tooth by tooth
- the treatment options, each on its own line
- the stages, the number of visits and the length of each session
- the full price, with what it includes and what it does not
What to bring
Older X-rays help the dentist see how your teeth have changed over time. Chronic conditions and medicines, especially blood thinners and osteoporosis treatment, sometimes change the treatment plan. Patients from abroad can send these documents by email before the trip.
- an identity document
- a list of the medicines you take, in English
- older X-rays or CT scans, if you have them
- medical letters about chronic conditions, pregnancy or allergies
If you are anxious
Dental anxiety is best mentioned at the first visit, not once treatment has started. The dentist agrees on a pause signal with you and explains each step before taking it. No treatment is done on the day of the diagnosis, so there is no needle and no drill. For the treatment that follows, conscious sedation with nitrous oxide costs £250 per session.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the first visit at Smalț?
The first visit is the diagnosis and costs £395. It includes the examination, the 3D CT scan (CBCT), photographs, an intraoral scan and a written treatment plan, sent by email within 48 hours.
Is any treatment done at the first visit?
No. The diagnosis takes 45 minutes, and treatment starts only after you have read the written plan and chosen an option.
Why is a CT scan needed at the first visit?
A CBCT scan shows the bone, roots and canals in three dimensions, where a regular X-ray shows only two. Implants, complex root canal treatments and wisdom tooth removals are planned on it.
Is a dental CT scan safe?
A dental CBCT scan uses a much lower radiation dose than a standard medical CT scan and is taken only when the dentist considers it necessary. If you are pregnant, say so before the diagnosis.
Can I take the CT scan and plan home?
Yes. The written plan arrives by email within 48 hours. The CT scan and photographs are yours, on a USB stick or by download link, so you can show them to another dentist.
