Step by step

Oral surgery and extractions in London

01

How the treatment goes

A tooth extraction starts with local anaesthetic, after which the oral surgeon loosens the tooth from the bone and removes it. A simple extraction takes 20 to 30 minutes. An impacted wisdom tooth, one that stays in the bone or under the gum, needs a small incision, sometimes sectioning the tooth, and 45 to 60 minutes. For lower wisdom teeth, the surgeon first checks on the 3D CT scan how close the nerve is.

02

Visits and timing

An extraction usually means 2 visits: the procedure and a check-up 7 to 10 days later, when the stitches come out. If you cannot come back in that window, you can ask for dissolving stitches and have the check-up with your own dentist, using the written report. Avoid flying in the first 24 to 48 hours after a wisdom tooth removal or sinus lift.

03

Bone grafts and sinus lifts

A bone graft adds bone material where the bone is too thin for an implant and costs £750 per area. A sinus lift raises the floor of the upper sinus to make room for an implant at the upper molars and costs £1,850. Both are planned on the 3D CT scan and add 3 to 6 months of healing before the implant can carry a crown.

04

Aftercare

For the first 24 hours after an extraction, do not rinse hard, smoke or drink through a straw, so the blood clot stays in place. Eat soft, cool food on the first day and hold ice against the cheek for 10 minutes at a time. Pain that increases after day 3 may be dry socket, an inflammation of the extraction site, and is treated at the check-up.

05

What the price covers

A simple extraction costs £450 and an impacted wisdom tooth £850, because it needs an incision, stitches and more time. Both prices include anaesthetic, the procedure and the check-up with stitch removal. Bone grafts and sinus lifts appear separately in the written plan, with their price, only when the CT scan shows they are needed.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a tooth extraction at Smalț?

A simple extraction costs £450 and removing an impacted wisdom tooth costs £850. Both include anaesthetic, the procedure and the check-up with stitch removal.

Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure rather than pain. Swelling and soreness for 2 to 3 days are managed with ice and the medicines the surgeon recommends. Anxious patients can have it under conscious sedation.

Can I fly after a tooth extraction?

After a simple extraction, flying the next day is usually fine. After a wisdom tooth removal or a sinus lift, wait 24 to 48 hours, because pressure changes can cause bleeding or discomfort. The surgeon confirms it at the end of the procedure.

When should a wisdom tooth come out?

A wisdom tooth is removed when it gets inflamed repeatedly, decays, pushes the tooth in front or has no room to erupt. A wisdom tooth that has come through straight and is easy to clean can stay. The surgeon decides on the X-ray or CT scan.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket is an inflammation of the extraction site when the blood clot comes loose or does not form. It shows as pain that increases after day 3 and an unpleasant smell. It is treated in the clinic by cleaning and dressing the socket.
