Step by step

General dentistry in London

01

How a check-up goes

A check-up takes 30 minutes and costs £175. The dentist examines each tooth, the gums, the bite and old fillings, takes two digital X-rays of the back teeth and gives you written recommendations. If decay is found, you get the price of the treatment before it starts. For a new patient, the first visit is the full diagnosis with a 3D CT scan, for £395.

02

Professional cleaning

A professional cleaning costs £195 and takes 60 minutes. It includes ultrasonic scaling for tartar, airflow for stains, polishing and fluoride. At the end you are shown the areas you miss when brushing. For most adults, a cleaning every 6 months is enough.

03

Composite fillings

A composite filling costs £295 for one surface and £450 for two or three. The dentist isolates the tooth with a rubber dam, a thin rubber sheet that keeps saliva away from the filling. The composite is placed in layers, hardened with light and adjusted to your bite. A filling takes 30 to 60 minutes.

04

Fitting it into a longer plan

Check-ups, cleanings and fillings are usually done in one visit each, so several can fit into 1 or 2 appointments. Patients who come for implants or veneers often have decay treated and a cleaning done first, before the main treatment. Your treatment record and X-rays are yours to keep.

05

Old amalgam fillings

Old amalgam fillings (the grey ones, containing mercury) are not replaced just because they are amalgam. They are replaced when cracked, when decay forms at the edge or when the tooth around them breaks. Since 2025, amalgam is no longer used for new fillings in the European Union, apart from medical exceptions. Replacement is done under a rubber dam.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a filling at Smalț?

A composite filling costs £295 for one surface and £450 for two or three surfaces. The price includes anaesthetic, rubber dam isolation, removal of the decay and polishing.

How often do I need a professional cleaning?

For most adults, every 6 months. Smokers and people with braces, implants or gum disease sometimes need one every 3 to 4 months. The dentist sets the interval at the check-up.

Does scaling hurt?

Ultrasonic scaling usually feels like vibration, with some sensitivity to cold on teeth with receding gums. When the gums are very inflamed or sensitive, the dentist numbs the area with local anaesthetic.

What is a rubber dam?

A rubber dam is a thin rubber sheet placed around the tooth being treated, keeping saliva and moisture away. Composite bonds better to a dry tooth. The dam also keeps water and instruments away from your throat.

Should old amalgam fillings be replaced?

Amalgam fillings are replaced only when they are cracked, have decay at the edge or the tooth around them has broken. An intact amalgam filling is checked at every visit. When it is replaced, the dentist works under a rubber dam.
