Step by step

Children's dentistry in London

01

How the first visit goes

A child's first visit at Smalț takes 30 minutes and costs £110. The child climbs into the chair, sees the mirror and the toothbrush, and the dentist counts the teeth. If decay is found, it is not treated that day: the parent receives a written plan with prices, and treatment starts at the next visit, when the child already knows the place.

02

How many visits and how long

Treatment for children is split into short visits of 20 to 30 minutes, so they do not get tired. A baby tooth filling takes one visit, as does a sealant. Check-ups are every 6 months, or every 3 to 4 months for children with a lot of decay. Children are treated by the senior general dentist, and the orthodontist sees them for a bite assessment.

03

Sealants and prevention

A fissure sealant covers the deep grooves of the permanent molars with a thin layer, so plaque cannot build up in them. The first permanent molars come through at around 6 years of age and the second ones at around 12, which is when sealants are usually done. A sealant costs £120 per tooth and needs no anaesthetic.

04

If your child is afraid

A child who is afraid of the dentist first comes just to see the room, with no treatment. The dentist shows each instrument before using it, agrees on a signal for a pause, and the parent stays in the room. For longer treatment, nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas) can also be used for children, when the dentist recommends it.

05

What the price covers

The first visit costs £110, a sealant £120 per tooth and a baby tooth filling £195. Prices include isolation of the tooth and polishing. Before any treatment, the parent receives the written plan, tooth by tooth, with the price of each.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a child's first dental visit at Smalț?

A child's first visit costs £110 and includes getting used to the chair, an examination and brushing advice for parents. A sealant costs £120 per tooth and a baby tooth filling £195.

When should a child first see a dentist?

A first dental visit is recommended after the first tooth appears and before the first birthday. At this visit the dentist checks the teeth and shows parents how to clean them. Children who come early get used to the clinic before they need treatment.

Do baby teeth need treatment if they fall out anyway?

Baby teeth with decay are treated, because the infection can reach the permanent tooth underneath and hurts as much as in adults. Baby molars stay in the mouth until around 10 to 12 years of age and hold the space for the permanent teeth.

What is a fissure sealant?

A fissure sealant is a thin layer of material placed in the grooves of the permanent molars, so plaque cannot collect there. It needs no anaesthetic, takes a few minutes per tooth and is done at around 6 and 12 years of age. It costs £120 per tooth.

When does a child need an orthodontic check?

An orthodontic check is recommended at around 7 years of age, when the first permanent molars and incisors are in. The orthodontist sees whether the jaws are growing in balance and whether braces may be needed later.
